Winthrop

Located about 10 miles west of Maine’s capital city, and settled in 1771, Winthrop, is a business and service center for the Western Kennebec Valley region. With over 12 lakes, ponds, and streams as well as hundreds of acres of farmlands and undeveloped woodlands, there is an abundance of wildlife and opportunities for boating, fishing, hiking, and other recreational activities.

The Winthrop Lakes Region boasts a number of places for relaxation and entertainment, including lakeside cottages, campgrounds and lodging facilities along with a selection of local restaurants and shops. Nearly 10% of Winthrop’s housing is seasonal and its population nearly doubles in the summer months. Mt. Pisgah is a popular hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing destination. The forested summit features the former Maine Forest Service fire tower, which provides a beautiful 360 degree view including Mount Washington and Camden Hills.

Historically a strong manufacturing community, The town has a diverse economy, featuring high-tech, manufacturing, medical, and professional services, tourism-based businesses, recreational businesses, and agriculture. Winthrop is important to several surrounding towns as a place to work and shop.
